Subaru Impreza WRX STI WR1

No. 373/500

Subaru Impreza STI WR1

Number 373

Continuing a Subaru tradition of building special, limited edition, models to celebrate their many World Rally Championship wins, the WR1 was announced and released in 2004, with just 500 to be created on a very limited run. There is now understood to be less than 360 of these editions left in the UK.

After Petter Solberg won the 2003 World Rally Championship, the ‘Prodrive’-developed WR1 was to be released. All finished in the very distinctive ‘Ice Blue’ metallic paint, with 18” Prodrive ‘Speedline’ alloy wheels and traditional gold Brembo calipers. The interior was to be finished in an equally eyecatching way. The blue and grey suede-effect Recaro seats, special alloy gear knob, ‘WR1’ branded carpets and a one-off tax disc holder bearing the individual number within the run of production, were clues to just how special this model was to become.

Our particular car has, rather amazingly, zero former keepers, with the latest owner the same who took delivery of the vehicle from Subaru UK back in June 2004.

Number 373 has been extremely well looked after throughout its life, with some-38 services carried out according to the fully stamped ‘373’ branded service and warranties booklet.

The Ice-Blue metallic paint is finished pristinely, with barely a mark throughout the paintwork. Looking closely, we can see the car still holds the original supplying dealer registration plates and rear window sticker; a nod to how unmolested number 373 has been throughout its life.

The factory ‘Speedline’ alloys remain and are in remarkable condition with no ‘kerb rash’, rust or staining throughout. Beneath, the gold calipers remain as bright and colourful as when they were new.

To the rear, the stock badges remain, as they do on the front wings. All the windows are ‘as they should be’, with no excessive markings or damage throughout. The rubbers are all in good condition and show no sign of shrinkage.

Inside the car, the originality continues. All four of the ‘WR1’ branded floor mats remain and are in strikingly good condition with very little wear (we can’t be sure that the rear mats have ever been stood on!). The ‘STI’ branded front seats are in great condition with very little wear all over. All manoeuvring seat mechanisms work as they should. The original ‘STI’ branded steering wheel remains and hasn’t been swapped out to an ‘aftermarket’ example as seems to have been the fashion. Again, this remains in great condition with no visible damage. As with the floormats, the rear seats look to have had very little usage (if any), with barely a crease visible in the original material.

Within the centre console is the original forged ‘WR1’ gear knob and special plaque to commemorate the model, listing Solberg’s World Rally Championship win alongside the drivers signature. From factory, the WR1 comes with air-conditioning, electric windows and mirrors, etc. which all work as they should. The dashboard is in equally great condition with no cracks or sun fading across the plastics.

Under the bonnet is where we really see the WR1 come to life. The turbo charged 2.0 litre engine roars into life on the turn of the key. Producing 315bhp and powering the WR1 from 0 to 60mph in just 4.25 seconds, she remains one of the very quickest cars on the road to modern standards. Number 373 is driven by the standard 6-speed gearbox and remains extremely tight throughout all gears and is as solid on the road as you’d expect with a car with such an extensive service history.

The WR1 comes with all of the original handbooks and manuals, as well as a custom folder containing all of the paperwork from the original letter welcoming the purchaser to Subaru, to the latest service and a vast amount inbetween.

The WR1 is an ever-increasing rarity with numbers dwindling away. A future classic, depreciation proof and a ‘never see another’ opportunity to own a one-owner-from-new example with extensive service history file.
